Religion is the organization of principles and practices around the worship of something or someone. People develop the rules of religion to try and get their relationship with God right. But like any man-made system, people can disagree about how the rules of religion are interpreted and applied. People who follow the same religion can often have wildly different ideas about how it should be lived. When that happens we have a natural tendency to assume that our rules are right and their rules are wrong, regardless of outcomes. How can we tell the difference between religion that is good and just and religion that is harsh and cruel when the rules of religion are in dispute?
