How Following Jesus Changes the Way We Vote
We ask how following Jesus should influence our relationships, how we raise our kids, what we value, and the decisions we make every day. It makes sense that it should also influence how we vote.
But what does that actually look like? What should Christians expect from their government? What values should guide our political choices? And how do we know if we’re voting according to the teachings of Jesus or simply using our faith to justify what we already believe?
Politics can bring out the best and worst in us. And when faith gets mixed in, things can get even more complicated. But following Jesus doesn’t stop when we step into a voting booth.
What Jesus taught about power, what matters in his kingdom, and how we treat people should shape the way we engage with politics. Which raises one important question: What does it look like to follow Jesus when we cast our vote? And how should Christians vote when their faith and political convictions don’t always agree?
Following Jesus doesn’t mean using government to enforce Christian beliefs, but it doesn’t mean keeping our faith out of politics either. Jesus taught a different way of understanding power, loving our neighbors, and caring for people who are often overlooked.
Those teachings give Christians a way to think about voting that goes beyond party loyalty or personal interests. They also challenge us to consider whether our political choices reflect the values of God’s kingdom.
