What Kind of Power Actually Changes Things?

What kind of power actually changes things?

We live in a world built on power.

Nations flex military strength. Governments legislate. Companies climb over each other for profit. Even churches get swept up in the belief that if we just win the political fight, everything will be fixed.

But it’s not just “out there.” We fight for control in our families, in our jobs, in our friendships. We use money, charisma, or influence to try and make life work for us. And when that doesn’t work, we chase harder.

Here’s the real question: do those kinds of power actually change things? Can legislation heal division? Can wealth secure peace? Can control transform people, starting with us?

In Acts 1:6–8, the first followers of Jesus asked the same question: what kind of power actually changes things? Jesus’ answer wasn’t about politics, nationalism, or military might. It pointed to something deeper – the power of the Holy Spirit, a power you don’t take but receive.
