When is it okay to get divorced? It’s a question that has crossed the mind of everyone who’s ever been in a struggling marriage and one that has many different answers for different people. It comes with assumptions about the power structures and privileges that are part of our closest relationships. It’s also a question posed to Jesus by people looking for the right religious answer. But when asked this question, he shows us in his answer the surprising place where Jesus, gender, and equality intersect.
