Have you ever felt alone, even when you’re surrounded by people? Maybe you’ve had nights where worries kept you awake, or days when every step felt hard, like pushing through thick fog. We all go through times when comfort feels far away, and we wonder if anyone really understands. If that sounds familiar, the Psalms can help. These ancient songs and prayers express nearly every human experience—disappointment, confusion, pain, and doubt among them. They speak honestly about our struggles and give us words when we don’t know how to pray.
For example, take a look at Psalm 43. The writer feels completely alone, surrounded by enemies, discouraged, grieving, and searching for answers. Maybe you’re feeling some of that, too. If so, I’d love to encourage you to read this Psalm and use its words as a guide to bring your struggles to God.
Start by praying it, word for word, just as it’s written. Then, let the Psalmist’s expressions shape your own prayers. Layer your personal struggles, thoughts, and feelings on top of what you’re reading.
The Psalms remind us that we’re deeply connected to others across history and that we’re never alone in our experiences. If you feel isolated, know that you are seen and loved. I’m praying that as you make the Psalms part of your life, you’ll discover God’s peace and find comfort in community.
Declare me innocent, O God! Defend me against these ungodly people. Rescue me from these unjust liars. For you are God, my only safe haven. Why have you tossed me aside? Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies? Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me. Let them lead me to your holy mountain, to the place where you live. There I will go to the altar of God, to God—the source of all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God! Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again – my Savior and my God!
